I’m confused about the creation. I know Mormons believe that Jesus created the world under the direction of Jesus, but in the Biblical account (used here), it’s God who creates everything. It seems like a contradiction to me.

Also, I know that Mormon doctrine holds that God has a body, yet even here we learn that the spirit of God was over the earth.

    Please help me understand.

Thanks for your question. I will break my response into a few parts and do the best I can to answer the points of question you have. Some background first: LDS doctrine comes by revelation from God to modern day prophets. Scripture supports our views, but we do not simply read one or two verses in the Bible and form a doctrine around it. So any scripture I cite is just “supporting evidence” but not the source…revelation from God to His prophets is always the source of our doctrine.

  6. mikebatie says:

We can say that God the Father created everything or “and God caused the dry land to appear” referring to the Father even though it was done by Christ because it was all under the planning and direction of God the Father. So in this sense God the Father is the supreme architect. Just like a head architect of a construction project doesn’t do all the work himself, he has others to help him carry out the creation and building of his masterpiece, but we still say that the architect built it.

  7. mikebatie says:

A few scriptures that we can allude to are:

Colossians 1:13-15 “…his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: FOR BY HIM WERE ALL THINGS CREATED…”

  8. mikebatie says:

Ephesians 3:9 “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in GOD, WHO CREATED ALL THINGS BY JESUS CHRIST.”

  9. mikebatie says:

The term “the Spirit of God” is another way of referring to the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Ghost, who is the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God also has reference to “the power and influence of God,” which I would think accurately describes the situation, with God’s power and influence moving upon the void and formless earth as the creation was taking place.

  10. Nepthu says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re saying that the LDS church believes that the spirit of God is the same as the Holy Spirit? It was my understanding that the Holy Spirit was not the spirit of God in your faith, but rather another separate piece of the Godhead.

Thank you for answering my questions. I find the Godhead doctrine problematic, but I respect your views.

  11. mikebatie says:

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are viewed 3 separate beings who comprise the Godhead. The Holy Ghost, like Jesus Christ, has many names and titles: Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit, Spirit of God, the Comforter, the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit of Promise. The Holy Spirit and the Spirit of God are the same to us, “Spirit of God” in the scriptures meaning the Holy Spirit that comes from, or is sent from God.

  12. Nepthu says:

Thank you for the candid responses. I appreciate your willingness to explain these issues to me.

i know very little about the mormon faith, but do you believe in the literal description of creation or are you open to the idea of gradual evolution? don’t get offended im just curious.

  22. mikebatie says:

Hey thanks for the question! The Church has no official position on the processes of creation, other than that God was the author of it. The actual processes God used, we leave to science to investigate and also welcome any new revelation God will give on the matter.

  23. Axe336 says:

Umm, yeah, that “I only give ye an account of this world” isn’t in my version of the Bible. Just sayin’.

Also, how does The Father telling Jesus “Let’s make man in our image.” reconcile with the fact the Jesus is also one of these Spirit Children or the fact that these Spirit Children existed before hand? Wouldn’t he just say “Let’s make sure the mortal bodies are the same sort of appearance as the spirit ones.” ?

  24. mikebatie says:

The quote you noted above is from The Book of Abraham. In the New Testament, Hebrews 1:2 notes “…His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.” Jesus Christ is indeed the creator of many worlds. But Genesis only gives us the account of the creation of our world.

  25. mikebatie says:

It was important that God said, “Let us make man in our image” instead of “make their bodies look like their spirits.” By being created in the image of God, it means to be created in the essence of God, to be able to possess and develop some of His divine attributes: love, charity, compassion, mercy, honesty, just, holy, etc. It sets us apart from the animal kingdom by saying that mankind is in the image of God, inheriting some of His divine attributes and potential.
