Big Love 33: Outer Darkness … March 15th Episode to include Mormon Temple Ceremony

in our culture. Brothers and Sisters, “Big Love” is not a ratings winner and we don’t wish to build their ratings for them. TV Guide does not experience the readership it once had. Some of your friends and neighbors will see the images in print and see our temple ceremonies acted out in the drama. Perhaps the greatest position of strength for us, is to stand by our beliefs and teach the gospel. No, HBO does not represent accurately the sacred dress or beliefs or ceremonies of the LDS Church …

Are these ‘contracts’ in writing? As for the rest of your rant: Huh? I’m no more Christian than say….a Mormon!

  3. noahjenkins says:

Well, I’m mormon and the cool thing is I’m not going to hate you back :) …I am a PhD in molecular biology and oncological sciences and 3-time published scientific author, as well as a former missionary and current Sunday school teacher at my church…I like to balance out what is known (science and objectivity) with the unknown/will never be known (faith/ religion). It’s unfortuante that many of the unaccurate sterotypes make us all seem like we’re nuts, and you guys hate us so much..oh well.

  4. AlecsDeLarge says:

To add… even the foundational history of their church is a mystery to most members because it is hardly discussed. In a provincial manner, resembling the puritan founders of Massachusetts, they consider reading anything about their church to be “anti-mormon” published by nonmembers sinful. It even gets to a point where BYU professors are fired for trying to bring to light the indiscretions of former leaders, as is their duty as historian. It’s pathetic, I have to be honest.

Are the same that published in Science on C. elegans developmental polarity? If so, I am impressed (I assume you are because it came from Utah). As for the balance you feel is necessary, question: why have you chosen to balance the Mormon unknown with your science? Why not balance your with Greek rather than Hebrew tradition? What is it about the mysteries of Thor or Rah that are not appealing while at the same time the mysteries of Yahweh are? Discrimination among theologies requires evidence.

  6. cowdragon says:

very well said AlecsDeLarge! Most haven’t even read their own church history, like for instance my own parents who owned the entire set, but never bothered to pick it up and read it. You want to read some strange things, read the history of the church from their own publications!

  7. Alleneagle88 says:

you should take a mission trip to North Korea, Iran, or Afghanistan. THAT would be entertaining.

  8. noahjenkins says:

Yes, I was published in Science. I went on my mission to France, but yeah, North Korea, Iran or Afghanistan would be very interesting….pretty hard, judging from their general distrust of Americans. I suspect missions focusing on service and humanity would have to suffice for now. Good idea though, go big or go home, right? :-)

  9. AlecsDeLarge says:

    Noah-
I’d like to hear your thoughts. Why balance with Hebraic rather than Greek, Egyptian, Chinese, Congolese…., tradition? It seems to me that one has to think in terms of either evidence or cost/benefit (either for or against family estrangement for example) to decide which “unknown” to espouse. Your thoughts?

LDS MORMON SCRIPTURES PREACH that BLACK SKIN is A MARK & A CURSE ->

“…the Lord God did cause a skin of BLACKNESS to come upon them (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 5:21).”

“And the skins…were DARK,according to the MARK which was set upon their fathers…which WAS A CURSE upon them…(Book of Mormon, Alma 3:6).”

“and the CURSING which hath come upon their skins…(Book of Mormon, Jacob 3:5).”

for this people…shall become a dark, a filthy, and a loathsome people, (Book of Mormon, Mormon 5:15)

  11. Ilegalplayer says:

LDS MORMON SCRIPTURES CALLED PEARL OF GREAT PRICE HATE BLACKS!

“being of the (BLACK AFRICAN)lineage by which he could not have the right of PRIESTHOOD,(Abraham1:26-27)”

24..from (BLACK AFRICAN)Ham,sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land.(Abraham1:23-24)

“..A BLACKNESS came upon all the (BLACK AFRICANS)…of Canaan..(Moses7:8)”

    “…seed of Cain were BLACK…(Moses7:22)”

30 And Satan sware unto (BLACK AFRICAN) Cain that he would do according to his commands..(Moses5:28-31)

I heard a lot of complaints from LDS members about showing the temple “endowment ceremony”– but I haven’t heard specifics, from ANY of them, as to how the depiction was inaccurate in either the actions or words of the ceremony itself. Accordingly, it’s impossible to adjudge exactly how “unfair” or “inaccurate” the Big Love ceremony depiction really was.

“It’s our secret and we don’t have to tell you what really transpires” is hardly an argument for the LDS church’s position

  13. AlecsDeLarge says:

and why was this marked spam? because somone disagrees with it? pathetic

  14. regondi says:

It is a watered down version of the masonic ceremony. It is bit ridiculous really. There is nothing sacred about it. I was a Mormon all my life til I recently left. I couldn’t live the lie anymore. There is absolutely no biblical justification for the mormon’s ceremony. Plus the fact that Joeseph Smith was a mason, and how the ceremony so closely resembles the masonic one makes you sit back and go…Hmmm…

I’m the reporter in this story. A rookie one at that – 2 months on the job when this was posted. Any tips from the viewers?

  16. wesak87 says:

would you be the female at the into and outro, or the male narrator? i thought it was a slick job either way. good work

  17. exempligratia says:

Wrote the Prophet Joseph Smith: ” No unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecution may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.” That was about 1842. it is now 2009. nuf sed….!

  18. LukeAir2008 says:

Thats funny. I was born a catholic and then became a born again-evangelical christian. I discovered that the Knights Templars/Freemasons copied their ceremonies etc. on what they found when they excavated the Jerusalem Temple. Im now LDS!

  19. LukeAir2008 says:

But we’ve crossed swords before and I think you’ve already dug your spiritual grave haven’t you?

  20. beachlady78 says:

Exposed, you mean show how STRANGE the endowment is?? Weirdos. AS if the endowment if for “Heaven?” YUK! I found it cold and creepy.

  21. tyland12003 says:

I saw the episode and thought it was terrific. I wonder who should be more upset at the so-called exposure, the LDS church or the Freemasons from whom Joseph Smith borrowed signs, tokens, and symbols. JS was a Freemason, folks. In these financial times, you should ask questions of any organization to which you pay 10% of your income. Maybe you’ll find it’s not the truth and, therefore, have a little extra dough on which to live.
